Parasite protection options

Protecting pets and eliminating parasites

Option 1: Proheart injection

Heartworms:

A Proheart injection is given at 12-weeks of age with the second puppy vaccination.

At 9 months of age (6-months later), a booster Proheart injection is given. The Proheart injection can now be given yearly for life.

Intestinal worms:

Worm your puppy using Milbemax Allwormer every 2-weeks until 12-weeks of age, and then monthly until 6-months of age. After 6-months of age, your puppy can be given Milbemax Allwormer tablets every 3-months for life.

Fleas and ticks:

Nexgard Flea and Tick can be given every month from 8- weeks of age (if they weigh more than 2kg). After 6-months of age, your puppy can be given Bravecto chews every 3-months for life.

Pros:

  • Vaccinations and Proheart injections can be aligned with 6-monthly or annual check ups
  • Heartworm protection is guaranteed all year round
  • After 6-months of age, you only need to remember to worm and flea treat your dog 4 times per year!

Option 2: Monthly chews

Hearwtorks, intestinal worms, fleas and ticks:

Nexgard Spectra is a multicoverage product that protects against all common parasites (it is not the same as Nexgard Flea and Tick!).

Nexgard Spectra does not protect against tapeworm. An additional Tapewormer tablet may be given to achieve complete protection (this is highly recommended if you live in a rural area).

Worm your puppy using Milbemax Allwormer every 2-weeks until 12-weeks of age except where Nexgard Spectra is used. Nexgard Spectra can be given from 8-weeks of age (if they weigh more than 2kg) every 1-month for life.

Pros:

  • Complete protection can be achieved in one product
  • Nexgard Spectra is a highly palatable chew and is a great monthly treat for your dog
