Dr Epstein’s interests include International Relations theory, with a particular interest in post-structuralist approaches and discourse theory, critical security studies and global environmental politics. In her book, The Power of Words in International Relations: Birth of An Anti-Whaling Discourse, Epstein approaches the topic of whaling both as an object of analysis in its own right and as a lens for examining the role of discursive power in international relations.

Before joining the department, Dr Epstein was a Georges Lurcy Visiting Scholar at the UC Berkeley Political Science Department. She holds two undergraduate degrees in Humanities (in Philosophy and Literature) and a Masters in Philosophy from L’Université de Paris-Sorbonne, an MPhil and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Cambridge (UK); and has taught at both Cambridge University and UC Berkeley. At Sydney University she teaches courses on global environment politics and IR theory.

Dr Epstein is also an expert associé of the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI/Science-Po Paris), an associate researcher of l’Institut Français des Relations Internationales (IFRI) and an a Associate of the Sydney Centre for International Law

Current Research Projects

Dr Epstein is currently involved in four research projects:

Her central project explores the theoretical foundations underpinning conceptions of agency, subjectivity and discourse in international relations.

A podcast of Dr Epstein's paper 'When the Pre-modern is Post-Modern: Hobbes, Lacan and the Making of the International System' presented at the University of London, Royal Holloway, University of London can be found here:'

Second, she has initiated a multi-authored collaborative project around rethinking 'norms' in IR. This project is yielding a series of rolling fora in various international relations journals, the first of which is International Studies Perspective (early 2012).

A third research axis centres on the international politics of surveillance and biometric technologies. Dr Epstein forms part of the Faculty research group on 'Surveillance and Everyday Life'. In July 2011, she delivered a keynote speech, entitled "The Big Other is Watching You: Surveillance, Sovereignty, Subjectivity," at the research group's conference at the University of Sydney.

The fourth project revolves around the international politics of food security.
