BACKGROUND

Dr Mikler's research interests are primarily focussed on the role of transnational economic actors, particularly multinational corporations, and the interaction between them and states, international organisations and civil society. He takes a comparative institutionalist perspective to the way in which economic actors are regulated, or exercise private authority, especially in respect of the social and environmental impacts of their instrumentally-motivated actions. His recent research is on the international car industry, applying the Varieties of Capitalism Approach to analyse the actions it is/is not taking in respect of the environmental impacts of its products. He is currently researching the intersection of public and private authority in world affairs, and the national institutional contexts that inform approaches to climate change mitigation.

Dr Mikler has presented his work at national and international conferences, and has had his research published as working papers, book chapters, and articles in journals such as Global Society; Business and Politics; Policy and Society (including editing a 2011 special issue on ‘Sharing Sovereignty for Policy Outcomes’); Regulation and Governance; Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society; Local Economy; and New Political Economy. His first book, published by Edward Elgar in 2009, is ‘Greening the Car Industry: Varieties of Capitalism and Climate Change’. He is currently editing a Handbook of Global Companies to be published in 2013 by Wiley-Blackwell and linked with the journal Global Policy. In 2008, the Standing Group on Regulatory Governance of the European Consortium for Political Research awarded him its inaugural Giandomenico Majone Prize. This prize recognises outstanding research by scholars in the field of regulatory governance. See http://regulation.upf.edu/index.php?id=giandomenico_majone_prize.
