BACKGROUND

Michael Jackson is a political theorist who has supervised PhD theses on Carl Schmidt, Georg Hegel, Friedrich Schlegal, Jean-Jacques Roussseu, and others. The topics have included loyalty, reason and revolution, commitment, civic religion, and more. He twice received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for outstanding teaching.

His research concerns the continuing impact of political theorists like Plato, Aristotle, and Niccoló Machiavelli. He is the author of three books, numerous book chapters and more than seventy articles in international, refereed journals. He has also contributed many opinion pieces to the media and edited Wikipedia entries. He has posted reviews on Internet Movies Data Base and Amazon.com. His blog ‘Political Theory and Practice: Thinking and Doing’ has 150,000+ hits. It contains links to his videos on YouTube.

He is on the editorial boards of the American Review of Public Administration, the Journal of Management History (UK), Journal of Value Inquiry (Netherlands), Springer Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning, and Theoria (South Africa). Earlier he served on the board of the Australian Journal of Political Science, the Australian Journal of Public Administration, Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia, Hobbes Studies (Finland), Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory (USA).

He served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Director of the University’s Institute for Teaching and Learning, and Chair of the Department of Government and International Relations.
