In 2011, Pippa Norris was Visiting Professor in Government and International Relations and will rejoin the Department in July 2012 as ARC Laureate Fellow and Professor of Government and International Relations, in conjunction with her ongoing post in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. A political scientist and public speaker, her research compares election and public opinion, political communications, and gender politics. She also served as Director of the Democratic Governance Group in United Nations Development Programme, NY and as an expert consultant to many international organizations such as the World Bank, Council of Europe and OSCE.

Honors include the 2011 Johan Skytte award (with Ronald Inglehart, University of Michigan). They share the prize for "contributing innovative ideas about the relevance and roots of political culture in a global context, transcending previous mainstream approaches of research". Known informally as the 'Nobel' prize in political science. previous winners include Robert Dahl, Sidney Verba, Theda Skocpol, and Robert Putnam.

Her research compares processes of democracy and democratization, elections, culture, and public opinion, political communications, and gender politics in countries worldwide. A well-known public speaker and prize-winning author, she has published almost forty books and her work has been translated into more than a dozen languages. She has served as an expert consultant for many international bodies including the UN, UNESCO, NDI, OSCE, the Council of Europe, International IDEA, the World Bank, the National Endowment for Democracy, and the UK Electoral Commission. She has served on executive bodies for the American Political Science Association (APSA), the International Political Science Association (IPSA), the Political Science Association of the UK (PSA), and the British Politics Group of APSA. She has held visiting appointments at Columbia University, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of East Anglia, the University of Oslo, the University of Cape Town, Otago University, and the Australian National University. Prior to Harvard, she taught at Edinburgh University.

Her most recent books are Cosmopolitan Communications: National Diversity in a Globalized World (with Ronald Inglehart, CUP 2009), an edited volume for the World Bank The Role of the News Media in the Governance Reform Agenda (2010) and Democratic Deficits: Critical Citizens Revisited (CUP, 2011). Her next book is Why Democratic Governance? Prosperity, Welfare and Peace (CUP 2012).
