The University of Sydney Politics Society

Members of the University of Sydney Politics Society at a speaker event

The University of Sydney Politics Society was founded in mid-2004 by a group of Government and International Relations students, who wanted to promote balanced, accessible and meaningful debate on campus.

The student-led society works closely with the staff of the Department of Government and International Relations and other university departments to plan a range of on-campus events. These include professional development and social events as well as visits from prominent Australian and international political figures.

Past speakers include the Hon. Nathan Rees MP, 41st Premier of New South Wales; Jose Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Minister of Foreign Affairs for East Timor; and Ronald Neumann, former US Ambassador to Afghanistan. Jose Ramos-Horta is also the society's inaugural patron.
