The University of Sydney Politics Society

Members of the University of Sydney Politics Society at a speaker event

The Politics Society is a non-partisan organisation that functions to bring balanced, accessible, and meaningful debate on a wide range of political issues, both domestic and international, to the university community. We are the primary association for students studying Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney.

Our main activity is to host public lecture events featuring speakers who have practical or academic experience and expertise in their field. These occur across a range of debate, forum or single-speaker formats. We also organise an extremely successful peer-mentoring program: the HD Exam/Essay series, which brings successful former students, and current tutors and academics together in an informal environment. Additionally, the Politics Society facilitates career and internship oriented events, coupled with social occasions.

Previous speakers we have hosted include: Professor Hugh White, Professor The Hon. Gareth Evens, Senator The Hon. Bob Carr; Gillian Triggs, President of the Australian Human Rights Commission; Antony Green, ABC Election Analyst; Dr Niels Marquardt, US Consul General in Australia, and Dr. Michael Fullilove and Linda Jakobson of the Lowy Institute for International Policy. Our patron and inaugural speaker is H.E Jose Ramos-Horta, the former President of East Timor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
