Abstracts submission for SSPS HDR Research Day 2017

4 July, 2017

The annual conference for SSPS higher degree by research (HDR) students is happening on 15 September 2017. The School is calling for abstract submissions for students who are interested to present a paper or part of their thesis. Deadline is Friday 18 August 2017.

Calling all SSPS HDR students!

The annual Research Day is upon us! This school-wide conference allows you to present your abstract and share your work with fellow peers. It’s a day of presentations, networking with HDR students outside your department, receiving valuable feedback on your work, a panel on post-HDR life, catch-up over lunch and exposure to one another’s field of research. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are traveling to upcoming national conferences such as TASA and APSA as well as other domestic and international conferences.

The School is now calling for expressions of interest in participating. Please get in touch with Tirta Swari by email if you are interested in participating in any of the following ways:

[1] Presenting a paper. This would involve providing a 15-20 minute presentation on the day (Powerpoint or otherwise) on a research topic of your choice. It could be a chapter of your thesis, it might just be an introduction to your research and your plan if you’re just starting out. We would highly encourage those wanting to present to also make a 3-5,000 word written paper available before the conference to be reviewed by a discussant (academic staff member) so that you get the best feedback possible and to mirror what happens at most external conferences. We will not force this option on those who don’t wish to write a paper.

If you wish to present a paper, please send through the following:
1)       Your name
2)       Department/Centre
3)       A proposed Paper title
4)       Keywords (this will help us group you with others in a similar field)
5)      A 100-200 word Abstract
[2] Upgrading Your Final-Year Research (NEW!). We want to give the opportunity to one or two students for those finishing up to get some in-depth feedback from staff and student peers before they submit their thesis. We will circulate key draft chapters ahead of time to a panel of peers who could then offer constructive feedback and their own insights on the day in front of an audience. If you are due to submit in the 12 months from September 2017, please submit 1) a one paragraph abstract and 2) a short description on where you are at with your writing, and how the roundtable would be beneficial to you.

[3] Helping In Another Way. If you are interested in running a session or have a good idea for a quick-talk or networking event to run on the day, we’re all ears!

[4] Just Turning Up. You are free to participate by just turning up. If you aren’t interested in being more involved, we’d still love to know you intend to attend. Knowing now will help us with catering and other organisation.

Please submit your abstracts to Tirta Swari by Friday 18 August 2017. For more information or RSVP, please visit this link.
