Deferment of enrolment (potential students)
Deferment is a commonly misused term. It only applies to potential students who wish to delay starting their university studies after receiving an offer to enrol in a course. Deferment occurs before a student even begins studying, not when they wish to take time off during the course of their studies. The latter is not deferment but referred to as a leave of absence. Students need permission to defer from the University.
Where a deferral of admission or enrolment in granted, the rules and resolutions in place for the degree at the time of enrolment - not offer - will be enforced.
Undergraduate (local) students
- Applicants who receive an offer based on their performance in the Australian HSC are allowed to defer for one year only.
- Applicants who have received an offer based on anything but the aforementioned grounds (e.g. mature entry) are not able to defer their enrolment. However, in the event that the applicant can demonstrate that there has been an extraordinary and unpredictable change in their circumstances, they will be permitted to defer for a period of one year only.
- All deferments are granted subject to the course being offered the following semester or following year. All UAC applicants receive an information booklet explaining the deferment process accompanying their offer.
- If an application for deferment is successful, the applicant will receive written confirmation of the deferment from the University. This will also include instructions on how to re-apply for the deferred course.
Postgraduate (local) students
- Potential postgraduate local students have an option to defer for one or two semesters and can exercise this option by returning the deferment form attached to the offer letter sent to them by the Business School.
- Students must return this deferment form as failure to do so will result in the lapsing of the offer. If an application for deferment is successful, the student will receive written confirmation of the deferment from the Business School after the census date. This will also provide instructions on how to re-apply for the deferred course.
A different procedure for deferment applies to international students, regardless of whether or not they have completed an Australian HSC.
"International student" refers to those who do not have Australian or NZ citizenship or permanent residency.
- International students who have applied for admission directly to the University via the International Student Office may be eligible to defer their offer of admission for one or two semesters.
- International students wishing to defer their offer should contact the International Office, providing the reason for the request.
- If a request to defer is successful, the student will receive written confirmation of the deferment and will be issued with a new offer letter.
