Mathematics (Faculty of Science) (Undergraduate)
This subject area if offered by the School of Mathematics and Statistics (Faculty of Science)
The School of Mathematics and Statistics offers units of study in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Pure Mathematics. The Junior units of study cover a range of topics in mathematics and statistics and are offered at five levels, Introductory, Fundamental, Normal, Advanced and the Special Studies Program (SSP), to suit various levels of previous knowledge. Intermediate, Senior and Honours units of study are mostly provided within one of the subject areas of Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Pure Mathematics.
The School of Mathematics and Statistics provides a range of senior units of study in the Science Subject Area MATH. Students wishing to obtain a major in mathematics must therefore take at least four units of senior mathematics. To proceed to honours in either Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics, students must have a major in mathematics. Honours entry is further restricted to students attaining a sufficiently high average mark in their senior year. Students interested in doing honours should consult the School to find out the precise details, and obtain advice on an appropriate senior year program.
This is an optional secondary major for the Bachelor of Commerce and a Major II option for the Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies). Students in other degrees (including combined) should refer to the their particular degree's resolutions and requirements for the ability to complete this major in their degree.
Requirements for the major
For the award of a major in Mathematics, students complete:
(i) a minimum of 12 credit points in prerequisite junior (1000-level) units of study as specified for the Mathematics major in the Faculty of Science Handbook.*
(ii) a minimum of 12 credit points of prerequisite intermediate (2000-level) units of study selected options specified for the Mathematics major in the Faculty of Science Handbook
(iii) a minimum of 24 credit points of senior (3000-level) units of study selected options specified for the Mathematics major in the Faculty of Science Handbook.
* Note: BUSS1020 are prohibitions for these units. Students in the Bachelor of Commerce and related combined degrees should enrol in BUSS1020 and choose an alternative junior unit rather than MATH1005/MATH1905 for their Mathematics major.
Note: Intermediate and senior units of study can only be counted towards the requirements for one major. Intermediate and senior units cannot be "double counted" towards two majors.
Availability of this major in Business School degrees
Students may also be able to complete this major under the following degrees. (Restrictions on the availability of this major apply. Its availability is subject to the credit point restrictions on units from other faculties in course rules of these degrees and restrictions based on other compulsory requirements of these degrees).
