Mathematics (Faculty of Science) (Undergraduate)
Description
The School of Mathematics and Statistics offers units of study in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Pure Mathematics. Junior units of study cover a range of topics in mathematics and statistics and are offered at three levels: Life Sciences, Normal and Advanced, to suit various levels of previous knowledge. Intermediate, senior and honours units of study are mostly provided within one of the subject areas of Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Pure Mathematics. Full details about the extensive range of units offered and prerequisites can be obtained from the School of Mathematics and Statistics handbooks, the Science Faculty Handbook or from the School's website.
Requirements for the major
For the award of a major in Mathematics, students complete:
(i) a minimum of 12 credit points in prerequisite junior (1000-level) units of study as specified for the Mathematics major in the Faculty of Science Handbook.*
(ii) a minimum of 12 credit points of intermediate (2000-level) units of study selected options specified for the Mathematics major in the Faculty of Science Handbook
(iii) a minimum of 24 credit points of senior (3000-level) units of study selected options specified for the Mathematics major in the Faculty of Science Handbook.
* Note: BUSS1020 and ECMT1010 are prohibitions for these units. If students are intending to complete an Econometrics or Quantitative Business Analysis major as well as a Mathematics major they should enrol in BUSS1020 or ECMT1010 and choose an alternative junior unit rather than MATH1005/MATH1905 for their Mathematics major.
Note: Intermediate and senior units of study can only be counted towards the requirements for one major. Intermediate and senior units cannot be "double counted" towards two majors.
The details of compulsory and elective units of study which are available for the current year can be found on the University's Unit of Study Handbook or from the Faculty of Science website.
