About us

Welcome to the Sydney Dental School

About us

The Sydney Dental School at the University of Sydney is Australia's first dental school. For more than 100 years, we have been providing oral health and dental education and training, creating exceptional graduates, conducting research that has a real-world impact and offering continuing education.

Our talented academic and professional staff ensure we offer a large range of coursework programs that cover general and specialist dental practice and public oral health issues.

A majority of our research is funded through the NHMRC, ARC, Australian Dental Research Foundation and NSW Dental Board. We also have strong partnerships with the Institute for Dental Research at Westmead Centre for Oral Health, NSW Health, Australian Dental Association, and receive support from generous donors, which contributes to scholarships and research, among other priorities.

Clinical settings

Our courses emphasis clinical experience, beginning in the first year of study at the Sydney Dental Hospital and Westmead Centre for Oral Health, as well as regional rotations in Bathurst, Bowral, Albury, Cessnock, Dubbo and Balina.

Teaching in functioning dental hospitals allows students the opportunity to meet patients, learn from diverse real world oral health issues, interact with dental and medical professionals, and develop an understanding of current healthcare issues.

Students also learn at simulation clinics based at Westmead Hospital and the Sydney Dental Hospital. These clinics help develop their confidence and skills to perform new procedures in a safe environment.

Teaching and learning

Our graduates are caring, clear thinking, clinically outstanding and research capable. They are engaged and globally aware and have the capability to become leaders in oral health, dentistry and research.

Academics at the Sydney Dental School are expert oral health professionals, and our researchers are pioneering new dental treatments to improve patient outcomes.

By studying with us you will acquire the patient-centred, evidence-based skills required for the modern dental practice.

Researchers in the Sydney Dental School work collaboratively to address major health issues, with a focus on three major themes, 'lifespan oral health', ‘ageing well, ageing productively’ and ‘chronic diseases’.

Discover how our innovative research is delivering advances in treatment, improving our understanding of the complex mechanisms that cause disease, promoting evidence-based teaching, and driving improved health outcomes across Australia and around the world.

Our community

Our school is based in integrated research, teaching, and clinical settings. Co-located with Sydney Dental Hospital, Westmead Centre for Oral Health and community clinics in New South Wales and beyond, our students, teachers, researchers and alumni are the foundation of the professional community.

Our engaged, socially conscious community is constantly seeking new ways to learn, share best practice and solve problems. This ensures we are able to continue to offer education of the highest calibre and conduct leading research, which translates to real-world impact.

Through professional associations, the Dental Alumni Society of the University of Sydney and the Sydney University Dental Association for students, our community members have access to resources, real-world advice and, of course, each other.

The Sydney Dental School is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, brings together the areas of dentistry, medicine, medical sciences, nursing and midwifery, public health and pharmacy into one faculty. The faculty is designed to enable innovation, excellence and strategic vision in teaching, research and clinical practice.
