Biographical details
Professor Blinkhorn has held senior academic and clinical positions at the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester. He was an adviser to the English Department of Health. Currently in addition to his University of Sydney role, he is Editor of the Health Education Journal, Director of the Australian Beacon Centre for the Global Child Dental taskforce and Honorary Professor at the University of NSW. He was given the prestigious Trendley Dean Distinguished Scientist award by the IADR in 2006 and the Queen presented him an OBE in 2005 for his services to children with special needs.
Research interests
The Department of Population Oral Health has a number of research themes. One focus of research is on improving the Oral Health of Aboriginal children and utilizing the services of Aboriginal Health Workers. The research is supported by Grants received from NHMRC, OATSIH, Dental Council of New South Wales, Centre for Aboriginal Health and the Centre for Oral Health Strategy. In addition, Professor Blinkhorn is the Director of Beacon Centre for the Global Child Dental Health Taskforce. Other research includes a water fluoridation surveillance program, an evaluation of rural placements for dental students and investigating the feeding patterns of toddlers living in deprived areas of Sydney.
