Research interests
Professor Neil Hunter is the Head of the Institute of Dental Research, Associate Director, Research, for the Westmead Oral Health Stream and an adjunct professor of the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology, University of NSW. He is a member of the Oral Health Executive and a founding Fellow of the Faculty of Oral Pathology, The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.
Neil''s early work laid the basis for a model of relapsing arthritis. More recently, he has contributed to understanding of the characteristic morphological changes of the destructive inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Investigations of chronic infection have been enhanced by the development of quantitative molecular probe analysis of bacterial populations. This approach has enabled the dissection of the microflora causally related to the major oral infections and provided novel approaches to the diagnosis of infection.
