Emergency information

The Campus Security team are the University's first response unit.

Each of our officers has undertaken training in first response techniques for diverse emergency situations, including situation assessment, management of criminal incidents, and crime scene preservation.

In an emergency only call Security on 9351 3333 or emergency services on 000. If we are the first to be notified of an incident, we will call emergency services.

We have access to external emergency services, senior university management, audit and risk management, and counselling services at all hours. We respond very quickly to on-campus emergencies of all types.

What to do in an emergency

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Tell someone about it: the floor wardens, your fellow workers, your supervisor, others in the area.
  3. You can call the Security Emergency Centre on 9351 3333 to get a Security team to your location or call emergency services on 000 (if on an internal phone dial 0 first).
  4. Be ready to describe where you are (suburb, street, building name, building number, floor and room).
  5. Explain what is wrong (a fire, a medical emergency or criminal activities).
  6. Be prepared to give your name and phone number/extension.
  7. Leave the building if the type of emergency warrants it, or if directed by wardens or security. Do so by the nearest safe exit.
  8. Do not use lifts in case of fire. Follow the directions of marshals, wardens and security.
  9. Know your assembly point.
  10. Do not re-enter evacuated buildings until the all clear is given by an authorised person.

Some emergency situations such as criminal activity may not require you to leave the building. In all emergency situations keep calm and think about the appropriate response.

Generally building evacuations are carried out because of fire, bomb threat or other risks such as gas leaks and electrical threats.
