The Spinal Pain Team within the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Research Group at The University of Sydney, is a vibrant group of researchers dedicated to improving the clinical management and outcomes for people who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders of the spine. Comprising ten academic staff as well as post-doctoral fellows, PhD and Honours students, the group conducts cutting edge research to advance our understanding of:

  • Effective conservative treatments for back and neck pain
  • Predicting the course of idiopathic neck pain and non-specific back pain in primary care
  • The development and validation of clinical prediction rules
  • Accurate diagnosis of sub-groups of non-specific back pain
  • Risk factors for occupational neck and back pain
  • Patient satisfaction with musculosksletal physiotherapy care
  • Patient-centered outcomes
  • The therapeutic alliance between the physiotherapist and patients
  • The relationship between sleep disorders and back pain

We have an active network of international collaborators, including psychologists, rheumatologists, epidemiologists, general practitioners, physiologists and neuroscientists. Our research is funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), the National Health and the Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
