Mona Vale Hospital
Mona Vale Hospital is a 165 bed general hospital within the Northern Area Health Service. At the present time the medical staff consists of approximately 65 Visiting Medical Officers, 3 Staff Specialists, and a Community Physician. In addition, 8 registrars, 8 residents and 5 interns are employed, the majority of which are seconded from either Royal North Shore Hospital or Hornsby Hospital.
A broad range of services is provided, although more highly specialised areas such as neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery are not represented. As a typical community hospital however, Mona Vale Hospital deals with a broad range of clinical cases which present an excellent educational opportunity for medical students. Medical students started at Mona Vale Hospital in 1995.
Mona Vale Hospital is an affiliated teaching hospital with the University of Sydney and the senior medical staff are committed to optimising the learning opportunities available to medical students. They seek to instil the principles of clinical reasoning, effective communications and professional, ethical medical practice.
Dr. Michele Franks is the Sub-Dean of the Clinical School and responsible for the supervision of elective students at Mona Vale Hospital. Dr. Franks, an Emergency physician, is happy to assist students who have any queries during their stay at Mona Vale Hospital.
There is a comprehensive library, several tutorial rooms and audio visual equipment specifically for educational purposes. A new Educational Centre is being developed which will incorporate a tutorial room, computer room, study facilities and a relaxation lounge with kitchen area. There is on-campus accommodation available with access to tennis courts. Immediately adjacent to the hospital are the golf course and Mona Vale beach. There is also a Common Room for use by students on campus, with private facilities, as well as tea and coffee.
