Applications for electives at the Northern Clinical School
The Northern Clinical School welcomes applications from overseas and Australian medical students wishing to undertake elective periods.
Your application will be considered on the basis of your previous training and the capacity of the Clinical School to accept you. Only students in their final or penultimate year of study will be considered.
Applications for elective placements are highly competitive. Receipt of an application does not guarantee an offer of a placement. Placements are processed on a first-come-first-served basis.
The Clinical School reserves the right to change a student's elective placement if the relevant department is no longer able to accept them.
Electives at the Northern Clinical School are for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. While we do accept students for longer periods, long term placements are limited to only a few students each year. Electives of over 6 or more weeks will be split between 2 disciplines, unless requested otherwise on the application form.
Elective placements are available during the Christmas period, Mid-December to Mid-January, though they are limited and some may have restrictions due to surgery closures or reduced staff. Owing to the large number of applicants we cannot accept students who have arranged placements at other institutions in Australia if the combined attachments exceed 8 weeks.
Students may only apply to/attend one Clinical School of the University of Sydney's Medical School.
Students must not apply directly to a potential Supervisor. Even if a Supervisor says they can accommodate the student, this is often not the case as the Department may have other Elective students or USYD students booked in at that time, which the Supervisor is unaware of. All initial inquiries MUST go via the Clinical School Electives Coordinator, .
Please carefully read and complete the Elective Application Package in conjunction with any additional information or instructions from the Clinical School. No student will be allowed to commence an elective placement unless all the documents on the Checklist for Application have been received by the Electives Coordinator.
Assessments are not offered to elective students.
Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified via e-mail as soon as possible after receiving your application.
Elective places in a teaching hospital of the Northern Clinical School require students to have considerable prior experience in taking histories and examining patients in clinical settings so that they are ready to participate appropriately as part of the clinical team.
The School is therefore not able to offer elective places to students from a university where the majority of the teaching is delivered on-line.
