Stage 3 Sydney Medical School - Northern students
The Tom Easton Memorial Scholarship
Tom Easton completed his medical degree at the Northern Clinical School in 1999. He suffered from cystic fibrosis and passed away, aged 24, on 1 January 2000, just a few days before he was to commence his internship at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Tom enjoyed studying medicine for the love of the knowledge, the experiences it provided and for the contribution he believed he could make. As a student, he achieved a unique balance between his medical studies, his engagement with people, and his travel and recreational activities. His warm and relaxed manner, calm integrity and quiet courage were ever present.
Tom lived beyond his illness. It never conquered his spirit.
"Tommo" was an inspiration to all who met him.
The scholarship is to be awarded annually to assist a student in undertaking his/her elective term studies. It is intended to encourage proposals which reflect Tom's approach and have the potential to enrich the lives of both the student and those with whom she/he works, in ways beyond the scope of normal medical practice. Such a proposal may involve working in an unusual or remote environment or making a special contribution to the welfare of a community.
Applicants (Northern Stage 3 - year 3 students) are required to submit an elective term proposal of no more than 400 words to Prof Jonathan Morris. Details regarding the application deadlines will be published via email each year. Short-listed applicants will be interviewed at the end of August.
The successful applicant will receive $2000 towards the elective term. Upon return, the scholarship holder will be required to make a short presentation on their elective term experience at the Annual Prize Ceremony.
