Hepatic encephalopathy and proliferation in the adult human brain
Primary supervisor: Greg Sutherland
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a clinical condition that manifests as confusion and ataxia when toxic metabolites build up in the brain secondary to liver dysfunction. HE is common in chronic alcoholics but can result from any severe liver disease. Our laboratory is interested in characterising the effects of HE by examining human post mortem brain tissue. Our current work has shown that HE patients can be clearly divided into groups with and without glial proliferation. This project combines lab-based techniques such as immunohistochemistry with epidemiological studies to determine the role of glial proliferation in the pathogenesis of HE.
