The Westmead Institute is one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia including cutting edge laboratories. There's over 400 staff pioneering research into a wide range of important human disorders affecting both adults and children.
Closely affiliated with both Westmead Hospital and the University of Sydney, research at The Westmead Institute extends from the laboratory to the patient - from "bench to bedside". The research spans cancer and leukaemia; infectious and immune diseases; mental illness, as well as liver, kidney, eye, heart and respiratory disease. The Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre, Westmead, a purpose built state of the art facility that provides fully integrated research, prevention, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation programs for patients and families coping with cancer.
Located at Westmead Hospital, the Charter of the Breast Cancer Institute (BCI) includes a commitment to research and the establishment of effective mechanisms to monitor the practice and outcomes of the management of breast disease in New South Wales. The roles of the BCI Research Program are to perform research, provide support for analysis and evaluation of BCI training and education projects, disseminate research findings, and inform the public about breast disease. The Institute for Clinical Pathology and Medical Research (ICPMR) is located at Westmead Hospital and is the main referral lab for the Pathology West Network which covers approximately 70% of NSW. ICPMR is probably best known as Australia's most comprehensive provider of pathology services. As well as servicing hospitals in Western Sydney, Nepean, Murrumbidgee, Southern, Western and Far West NSW, they provide tertiary services throughout NSW and, where appropriate, throughout Australia and even to some overseas centres. Located at Westmead Hospital the Centre for Vision Research was established in 2001 to bring together the vision and allied sensory research being conducted by the University of Sydney Department of Ophthalmology at Westmead Hospital. The Centre collaborates with many other University departments and their Research Centres.
