Dr Abilio Neto is a registered psychologist in New South Wales. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) with Honours from The University of New South Wales and a Ph.D. in the area of Pharmacy Practice from the University of Sydney for which he was awarded the H.Tasman Lovell memorial medallion for the year 2000. This prize is awarded to the best Ph.D. in psychology (Dr Neto’s Ph.D. was a joint project between the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Department of Psychology). He has an interest in the handling of Pharmacist Only and Pharmacy medicines in the pharmacy setting. He formerly held the position of “Program Manager for Pharmacy and Pharmacists Only Medicines” at the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (NSW Branch) and was the inaugural Research and Development Manager at the National Prescribing Service (NPS), the peak national body for providing medicines information and resources for consumers, health professionals, members and stakeholders involved in Quality Use of Medicines. Currently, he holds an honorary associateship at the Faculty of Pharmacy where he is engaged in a number of research projects on the practice of pharmacy and student supervision.
Dr Neto has been guest speaker at a number of major international pharmacy conferences, including World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Singapore, 2001), Lifelong Learning in Pharmacy Conference (South Africa, 2002), World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Sydney, 2003), Lifelong Learning in Pharmacy Conference (Canada, 2005). Dr Neto has published extensively in pharmaceutical and medical journals. He has authored more than 30 professional papers and articles on the handling of medicines in the pharmacy setting and also on behaviour change methods for the health care setting. His Ph.D. work on the use of simulated patients as an educational training method for the pharmacy setting is now widely applied around the globe and has been used to implement change in practice behaviour in a number of areas, including the implementation of standards of practice in Australian community pharmacies and the implementation of protocols for the sales of non-prescription medicines.
