BIOSAFETY
Only work with Risk Group 1 or Risk Group 2 microorganisms may be carried out within the Faculty of Pharmacy, and only within an appropriate facility. All work with microorganisms must be in accordance with the PC1 or PC2 requirements of AS2243.3 – Safety in laboratories: Part 3 Microbiological aspects and containment facilities.
All work involving genetically modified organisms (GMOs) must be approved by the University of Sydney Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). The appropriate application forms must be submitted to the IBC & you must have received written approval from the IBC prior to commencing work. Some work with GMOs will be required to be undertaken in a PC2 Laboratory that has been approved by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR). Further information can be obtained here.
Tissue culture facilities in the Faculty:
- OGTR PC2 certified facility (S208) under The Gene Technology Act 2000 and Gene Technology Regulations 2001 and the Amendments to the Act and Regulations commenced on 1 July 2007. This facility is used for conducting NLRD projects, handling human samples and PC1 classified work. The facility has 3 biosafety cabinets and 4 CO2 incubators.
- PC1 facility (N257A and B) for PC1 classified work. The facility has 2 biosafety cabinets, 1 cytotoxic cabinet and 3 CO2 incubators.
- PC2 microbiological laboratory (N423). Newly refurbished facility which has 2 biosafety cabinets and 4 CO2 incubators.
Autoclave facilities (N422 and S226)
- The Faculty has 2 Atherton sterilisers in quarantine and PC2 certified areas. For training please contact .
