Research degrees

Sydney research students join a community among the top 1 percent of research universities in the world, producing groundbreaking work across a wide range of discplines.
A research degree requires an in-depth study in a specialised area. A research student undertakes a major thesis, supervised by a staff member. It is usually possible to upgrade from the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), provided satisfactory progress is made in the first year.
At Sydney we have a particular focus on cross-discplinary study, encouraging new ways of thinking about problems in areas critical to our common future.
Our research degrees have two purposes
- For you to prepare a substantial piece of work that represents a significant contribution to a particular field of study.
- To train you in general research methodology and equip you with transferable research skills to pursue an academic career or take into a career in industry, business or elsewhere.
