Granular systems can be classified according to the material from which the granules are made of. Packs of marbles, cereals, ceramic balls, and sand particles will be classified as brittle granular systems, since under pressure the particles prefer to crush rather than squash. Packs of bouncing balls or brass balls will not crush and hence be considered soft, but while during unloading the bouncing balls regain shape, the brass balls permanently deform. The purpose of this project is to study experimentally and numerically the micromechanics of deforming soft particles, from a radically new way. This project will be co-supervised by Dr Gwenaelle Proust.Type of project: Experimental/Theoretical.
