El Chigüire Bipolar

The makers of Venezuela's leading satirical news site El Chigüire Bipolar discuss the politics of satire with the makers of Australia’s in no way leading satirical news site The Chaser.

The Speakers

El Chigüire Bipolar is an explosively successful Venezuelan satire site created in 2008 by Elio Casale, Jesús Roldán and Juan Andrés Ravell, a group of friends who saw an opportunity to use online satire to shine a light on the suppression of news by the oppressive Venezuelan government.

El Chigüire was one of the winners of the Václav Havel Prize for the Creative Dissident 2017, in recognition of their outstanding commitment to honestly covering the news. According to Garry Kasparov, secretary Of the Human Rights Foundation, "Their combination of humour coupled with honest uncompromising analysis demonstrate the great power of satire when criticising authoritarian regimes."

Julian Morrow has made a career of public nuisance in various forms, co-founding satirical media empire The Chaser and joke company Giant Dwarf, as well as making TV shows including The Election Chaser, CNNNN, The Chaser's War on Everything, The Hamster Wheel, and The Checkout. His work has been nominated, unsuccessfully, for many awards, and prosecuted successfully in many courts.

Due to the unavailability of several respected media commentators, in 2009 Julian was invited to give the Andrew Olle Media Lecture, an honour he later demeaned by creating The Annual Inaugural Chaser Lecture. In 2012 and 2013 Julian lowered standards at ABC Radio National as host of Friday Drive. At the 50th Annual AWGIE Awards, the Fred Parsons Award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Comedy was awarded to Julian Morrow by the event’s MC, Julian Morrow.

The University of Sydney is also a proud partner of the 2017 Chaser Lecture to be delivered by El Chigüire Bipolar on the 30 November at the Great Hall.
