As a new lecturer in veterinary physiology with the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Peter White is excited about the research opportunities which lay ahead. Peter has spent the last three years completing his PhD under the supervision of Professor Peter Windsor and Dr Jenny-Ann Toribio. He has been researching a birth defect that occurs sporadically in beef calves in southern Australia that has no known cause.
This MLA funded project has involved collaboration with government and private veterinarians and visits to affected farmers throughout southern NSW and northern Victoria. Through his research, Peter has demonstrated a link between poor maternal nutrition and the birth of deformed calves. In addition, Peter has demonstrated a strong association of the disorder with drought. He is currently continuing this research by examining the association of the disorder with other climatic factors and by providing extension material to producers to raise awareness and hopefully reduce the incidence of deformed calves.
