About this major
Business Information Systems (BIS) underpin everything a business does. In an information age, with a focus on information as a key business resource, BIS have emerged as the key enabler of innovation and operational efficiency by ensuring the right information is available to the right people at the right time.
BIS examines how information, knowledge, data and enterprise information systems can be used strategically for business process improvement. You will learn how to develop innovative and practical solutions for business problems.
You will gain expertise on BIS strategy and e-commerce, information and knowledge management, business intelligence and decision making, and business process management and innovation.
There is currently a global shortage of workers skilled in BIS and salaries for graduates are relatively high, with professionals in demand. Employers are looking for people who understand both business and technology issues and have the skills and knowledge to help shape their organisation's strategy and planning.
By studying BIS, you will be equipped with the blend of sought-after business and technical skills and play an important role in helping organisations make the most of the potential of modern information and communication technologies.
About this major
To meet the requirements for a Business Information Systems major, you must complete 48 credit points in units of study, as follows:
(1) two 1000-level core units of study (12 credit points):
- Digital Business Innovation
- Working in Digital Ecosystems
(2) three 2000-level selective units of study (18 credit points), selected from the following options:
- Data Governance and Technology Assurance
- Digital Business Management
- Managing Information in Organisations
- Working in High-Performing Project Teams
(3) one 3000-level core unit of study (6 credit points):
- Business Information Systems in Practice
(4) two 3000-level selective units of study (12 credit points), selected from the following options:
- Business Intelligence for Managers
- Business Process Analysis and Design
- Enterprise Systems and Integrated Business
- Implementing Agile Design
- Industry and Community Project
Note. Not all selective units will be available each year.
Students also have the option of completing a minor in this subject area.

BIS graduates are found in major consulting companies, major technology companies and most large companies that rely on technology.
Career outcomes
- Business analyst: bridge the gap between business and IT to solve business problems using current and future technologies and assess and improve business performance and models in an ever-changing world of FinTech, Machine Learning and Big Data.
- Management consultant: join a major consulting firm such as Deloitte Consulting, Bain & Co., McKinsey, PwC or KPMG as an external analyst working on business and technology related issues.
- Compliance/IT auditor: evaluate the suitability and effectiveness of your firm's IT systems and internal controls against policies and regulations. Work on projects that improve the organisations’ internal processes and performance.
- Enterprise architect: a senior role in which you will be part of a team that translates business strategy into concrete solutions and designs and executes the blueprint of IT solutions to support that strategy.
