The Dean's Lecture Series brings key national and international guest speakers in the fields of engineering and information technologies to the University of Sydney, to share their knowledge and expertise with our students and staff.
Professor Patrick Aebischer was president of École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) from 2000 to 2016, and he is generally viewed as the main architect and driving force behind EPFL’s rise from a regional engineering college to a world class research university. He was trained as an MD and a neuroscientist at the Universities of Geneva and Fribourg in Switzerland. He was a faculty member of Brown University and the University of Lausanne before joining EPFL.
Professor Aebischer is the founder of three biotechnology companies. He presently seats on the board of Lonza, Nestlé and Logitech. He is the Chairman of the Novartis Venture Fund and a senior partner of NanoDimension-III, a venture capital firm based both in Silicon Valley and Lausanne.

University of Sydney alumnus Jim McIlvenny is the President of Dow Asia Pacific, responsible for the oversight and execution of the regional growth strategy. During his 35-year career at Dow, Jim has led several business leadership roles in Chemical and Performance Products at global and regional levels as well as geographic leadership roles in Asia Pacific, Greater China, India, Middle East, Africa and Turkey, before assuming his current regional role.
He was appointed Group Senior Vice President of Mega Projects in 2010 before being named as Chairman of the Dow Sadara Project Office and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sadara Chemical Company – a joint venture developed by Dow and Saudi Arabian Oil Company.
