Bachelor of Music Studies (Honours)

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 1  Course codes

2  Attendance pattern

(1)    Candidates must complete the requirements for the Honours course full-time over two consecutive semesters.

(2)    If the relevant delegate is satisfied that a student is unable to attempt the course on a full time basis they may permit the student to undertake it part-time over four consecutive semesters.

3  Admission to candidature

(1)  Admission is by permission of the Associate Dean Education on advice from the Honours Coordinator.

(2)  To qualify for admission, a student must:

(a)  have completed requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree (or equivalent) from the University of Sydney or equivalent studies at another institution; and

(b)  have achieved:

(i)    a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 75 in second and third year units of study for Performance or Musicology; or

(ii)  a distinction average in third year units of study for Composition;

(c)  have submitted an honours project proposal and successfully completed either or both of an audition or interview; and

(d)  meet any requirements for honours entry set by the relevant department or school.

4  Requirements for the degree

(1)    The units of study that may be taken are set out in Table A for the Bachelor of Music Studies (Honours).

(2)    To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music Studies (Honours), a candidate must successfully complete 48 credit points of honours units of study at 4000-level or above in the honours subject area.

5  Award of the degree

(1)    The Bachelor of Music Studies (Honours) degree is awarded in classes ranging from First Class to Third Class, ass specified in the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

(2)    A single result is provided as an aggregated mark based on the Honours units of study the student has completed.

6  Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 July 2024, and students who commenced their candidature before that date who elect to proceed under these resolutions.
