No story of our alumni can begin anywhere other than with the foundation of the Faculty in 1856 and its earliest graduates. The stories of our pioneer alumni are varied. Some received their degrees by fulfilling the terms of the early examination system which enabled them to present for the Sydney MD examination if they held an MB degree from another university and “they had been in bona fide medical or surgical practice for not less than 10 years”. Others received their degrees ad eundem gradum. With the opening of the Medical School in 1883, the Faculty recognised the first alumni who graduated after a course of study entirely at the University of Sydney.
