- ^ Demonstrators in Anatomy or Physiology appointed after the establishment of separate Chairs in Anatomy and Physiology (1890) have not been listed unless they were concerned with the teaching of Histology.
- ^ William Haswell was appointed Demonstrator in Histology and was variously Demonstrator and Lecturer in Biology from 1882 to 1888 and became Challis Professor of Biology in 1890. He was involved in teaching medical students Biology but, in addition, taught Histology under Anderson Stuart up to and including 1886.
Separate chairs in Anatomy and Physiology established 1890; Thomas Anderson Stuart retained Physiology and J. T. Wilson became the first (Challis) Professor of Anatomy. Chair in Histology and Embryology established in 1928, C. W. Stump foundation (Bosch) Professor. Before 1898, Anderson Stuart himself may have taught Histology, but after 1898 this teaching seems to have been done by Herbert Hawker, H. G. Chapman and J. R. Dixon. Histology remained part of the responsibility of the Department of Physiology until 1922 after which it passed to Anatomy until the creation of the Department of Histology and Embryology in 1956. - ^ Also Lecturer in Principles and Practice of Medicine (1901–1909).
- ^ Also University Lecturer in Clinical Medicine (1914–1926) and Medical Jurisprudence (1904–1909).
