In both earthquakes and landslides, grains are often crushed during flow. This changes the flowing behaviour, and causes the flow to accelerate. This project will develop an experimental technique to investigate this phenomenon.

Many natural phenomena, such as earthquake faulting, landslides, avalanches and glaciers, involve significant crushing of the grains which facilitate movement. Novel experiments will be conducted to investigate the behaviour of crushable granular materials as they are subjected to shear. The coupled behaviour of crushing and segregation will be studied, and models will be developed to both replicate and understand the behaviour.
