The Upper GI surgery department at RNSH is a tertiary referral unit which has treated many patients with gallbladder disease over the past 20 years. There is a large prospective clinical database which contains many patients with this condition who have undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This project will use the clinical database (1999-2020) to assess pre-operative risk factors and short-term outcome after elective or urgent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Outcomes data on these patients will be compared with outcomes in patients who had grade 1 or 2 cholecystitis only. A propensity matched analysis will be undertaken with the goal of producing a manuscript for publication. This work could form part of a Masters of Surgery or SMP MD project.

Grading of operative findings impacts on outcomes after laparoscopic cholecystectomy
This project documents a new operative grading system for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and uses data prospectively collected over a 10-year period in the Northern Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Unit.
Intraoperative cholangiogram correlation with ERCP findings in patients with gallstone pancreatitis
To determine whether patients had an operative cholangiogram (x-ray of the bile duct) at the time of their laparoscopic cholecystectomy when they present later for ERCP because of pancreatitis.
