Identifying the unique characteristics of ferry systems to determine how to make optimal decisions in terms of networks, headways, and fares.
Ferry systems are a crucial component of public transport networks in many cities situated next to relevant water bodies. While there is an extensive literature on buses and rail systems to make an optimal strategic design (i.e., decisions that cannot be changed often), ferries have been mostly overlooked. The aim of this project is to identify the crucial differences and similarities, so that those approaches can be adapted and strategic insights for ferries can be obtained. The findings and methods will be applied to the Sydney’s ferry system.
