Synopsis

This project aims to develop innovative sutures by using advanced polymer chemistry and additive manufacturing. The goal is to create sutures with customizable properties and broad applications across various surgical fields, including medical and veterinary practices.

This PhD project offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge research with real-world applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original research in the development of biodegradable biopolymer-based sutures.
  • Apply advanced polymer chemistry and surface functionalization techniques.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including industry partners, to translate research findings into practical solutions.
  • Participate in the design, testing, and optimization of sutures for diverse medical and veterinary applications.
  • Present research findings at conferences and contribute to scientific publications.

All research will be conducted using the state-of-art facilities and equipment located at the Faculty of Engineering and Sydney Institute of Agriculture.

Additional information

Offering:

A scholarship for 3.5 years at the RTP stipend rate (currently $40,109 in 2024). International applicants will have their tuition fees covered. 

A supplementary scholarship may be available if applicant has a RTP scholarship or equivalent.

Successful candidates must:

  • Have a Bachelors degree (1st class honours or equivalent) or a Masters degree in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Bioengineering, textile engineering or a related field
  • Strong background in polymer chemistry and biodegradable materials.
  • A significant background in polymer processing using thermal processing
  • Experience in laboratory research, including material characterization techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a high level of motivation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
