Sydney University Hockey Club and Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Sophie Boyle has claimed the Sydney Women’s Hockey League Best and Fairest Award for Metro League 2.
Boyle (B. Applied Science – Physiotherapy), who will be looking to add a Second Grade premiership her to her Best and Fairest award, has been a revelation this season, where she has played for both the First and Second grade sides. Despite being small in stature Boyle is a strong centre half, who also shows plenty of skill in attack at inside forward.
Fellow Sydney University EAP scholarship holder Nina Khoury (B. Commerce & B. Laws) has won the Highest Goal Scorer Award for Metro League 1, and was also named as runner up in the Loretta Dorman Medal for Best and Fairest (Metro League 1).
Khoury, who has already represented Australia at Under 21 (captain) and Australia A level, scored an incredible 23 goals this season as an attacking midfielder for Sydney University.
“It is great to see a couple of Sydney university Scholarship athletes rewarded for their efforts throughout the season,” said Aaron Oman, Sydney University Hockey Club’s Director of Coaching.
“Nina Khoury was without doubt one of the top players in the competition this year and caused a number of sides headaches with her ability to eliminate and set up her strikers.
Nina would probably have won the Loretta Dorman Medal had she not missed four games while representing Tasmania (her home state in the National League), and when attending National Camps as a member of the Australian Development Squad.
There is no doubt that Nina has a big future and I expect her to push for National selection in the next couple of years.”
