The Sydney Uni Women’s Water Polo team has taken out the L1 Summer Metro Premiership after competing at Sydney University Sports & Aquatic Centre over the weekend.

The Lions beat the Balmain Tigers in a close encounter, with a final score of 5 – 4. Goal scorers for the Lions were A. Brightwell 2, K. Gofers 1, E. Lewis 1, H. Buckling 1. Co Captain Keesja Gofers was named Grand Final MVP while Lea Yanitsas was also outstanding throughout the game. This is a great win for the club, it’s 24th L1 win which will see them well placed for the upcoming National Water Polo League competition, set to commence in about a month.

Coach on the day and Women’s program director Ian Trent was very pleased with his teams success “Any win over Balmain is a good win as the Tigers traditionally turn it on in big games, but this was a match we never looked like losing”. He said.

The squad will be joined in training by their club imports Maddy Rosenthal and Kelly Mendoza who both hail from America and have had highly successful College careers with the University of Southern California. The girls have also represented the U.S in a number of international competitions which will boost the squads leadership and experience.

Given both the women’s and men’s sides were within a whisker of reaching the gold medal match in the NWPL in 2014, they will be working hard to see improvements this season.
