Background

This scholarship is funded by the United States Studies Centre to assist with students' travel costs to advance their research.

1. Background

a. The United States Studies Centre Travel Support Scheme – Masters was established to assist students enrolled in Masters of US Studies at the University of Sydney who are intending to travel for research purposes.

b. This Scholarship is intended to support travel costs related to student's travel to archives, special collections and/or research institutes relevant to the advancement of the student’s research.

c. This Scholarship is funded by the United States Studies Centre.

2. Eligibility

a. To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must be enrolled full-time in:

I. the Master of US Studies at the University of Sydney, and

II. any Master of US Studies capstone units of study at the University of Sydney in either Semester 1 or Semester 2. The capstone units are:

i. USSC6916 Research Essay in US Studies,

ii. USSC6910 Special Topics in US Studies,

iii. USSC6205 Internship Project,

iv. USSC6214 Internship Project 2,

v. USSC6204 Internship Capstone,

vi. USSC6201 Dissertation,

vii. USSC6211 Treatise 1, and

viii. USSC6212 Treatise 2.

b. Applicants must be able to provide a proposed budget of how the Scholarship funds will be used and will assist in the advancement of their research.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, and applicant’s proposed budget for use of the scholarship funds.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of the Chief Operating and Academic Officer of the United States Study Centre, or their nominee, and at least one other academic member of staff from the Centre.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $2,500 per annum.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one off payment after the census date of the relevant semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Chief Operating and Academic Officer of the United States Study Centre and it is not transferable to another course or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient

I. must maintain satisfactory academic performance,

II. is responsible for securing their own visa or travel authority for international travel,

III. must provide the Coordinator with reliable contact details (such as mobile phone number) during the duration of their overseas travel, and

IV. must collect evidence of the use of the scholarship funds including receipts, invoices and other documentary proof of their research trip.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. withdraws or is not enrolled in any Master of US Studies capstone units of study listed in Clause 2.a.II.,

III. commences part-time study without prior approval,

IV. suspends candidature for more than one semester,

V. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

VI. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VIII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University and the United States Studies Centre reserve the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
