Background

Established in 2017 and funded by the Wingara Mura Bunga Barrabugu Compact, this scholarship aims to financially assist students participating in their honours project. We hope to encourage and support more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to complete honours and for more allied health students to develop skills in Indigenous research.

1. Background

a. Established in 2017 and funded via the 2017 Wingara Mura Bunga Barrabugu Compact, this Scholarship will assist students to meet the costs of participating in their honours project e.g. travel, conference presentations, and data collection materials. Through the Scholarship, we hope to encourage and support more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to complete honours and for more allied health students to develop skills in Indigenous research.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must either identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strat Islander, or a student intending to undertake or are completing honours in research within the areas of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health, disability or education.

b. Applicants must be enrolled in an honours degree in the University of Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health and on track to complete their honours in the following year.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, a letter of support from the research supervisor and a personal statement which includes:

I. an outline of the proposed research,

II. a description of the potential impact of the honours research,

III. what applicants plan to gain from completing an honours degree, and

IV. how the Scholarship funds will assist completion of the honours program.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Honours in the Sydney School of Health Sciences. The Selection Committee is chaired by the Director of Honours and will consist of two other members; one Sydney School of Health Sciences Academic Staff and the Faculty Associate Dean (Indigenous Strategy and Services).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is tenable for one year only.

b. The one off payment will be made after the census date of the first semester of enrolment in the honours program.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the School Director of Honours and it is not transferable to another honours program, school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must remain successful enrolled in the honours program and continue to meet satisfactory academic progress.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval,

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once terminated, a scholarship will not be reinstated.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
