Who's eligible

T. J. Nicholls Memorial Scholarship

You must:

  • be Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident 
  • be currently enrolled full-time in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine within the Sydney School of Veterinary Science
  • be undertaking the unit VETS6408 Public, Industry or Community Placement in the year the scholarship is awarded.

The Commonwealth Chief Veterinary Officer's Scholarship

You must:

  • be Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • be currently enrolled full-time in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine within the Sydney School of Veterinary Science
  • be undertaking the unit VETS6408 Public, Industry or Community Placement in the year the scholarship is awarded.

Please note: Applicants who are receiving a scholarship administered by the University of Sydney are not eligible.

Background

This Scholarship was established in 2024 using donations by the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia. The scholarship aims to support postgraduate students undertaking placement in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

a. This Scholarship was established in 2024 using donations by the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia. The scholarship aims to support postgraduate students undertaking placement in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the applicant being an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident and being currently enrolled in full time in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine within the Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be undertaking the unit VETS6408 Public, Industry or Community Placement in the year the scholarship is awarded.

c. Applicants who are receiving a scholarship administered by the University of Sydney are not eligible.

3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. a personal statement outlining the following:
i. applicant's background, commitment to the livestock industries in Australia and how they plan to further this is the future,
ii. commitment to working in a team and willingness to become part of a national/global team supporting the livestock industries,
iii. career goals, and
III. reports of three referees (endorsement email from teaching staff is acceptable).

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School of the School of Veterinary Science, or their nominated delegate(s).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued approx. $1,000 per annum and as one-off payment. The exact value of the scholarship will be determined by the Head of School of the School of Veterinary Science and stipulated in the scholarship offer letter.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid after confirmation of enrolment into VETS6408.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of Head of School of the School of Veterinary Science or nominated delegate(s), and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course/VETS6408 or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval by the Head of School of the School of Veterinary Science,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave,
VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
