Who's eligible

You must:

  • have an unconditional offer of admission or currently enrolled to study full-time in a PhD within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney
  • conduct research in the area of the InSync Project to develop and test strategies to mitigate jetlag, founded on biophysical modelling of circadian rhythms
  • hold at least one of the following in the field of the project, including but not limited to nutrition, physical activity, biology, neuroscience, physics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, psychology, physiology, and medicine:
  1. an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class Upper) or equivalent, or
  2. a Master’s degree
  • be a recipient of a primary stipend and tuition fee scholarship from the University of Sydney
  • have lead supervisor as one of the InSync Chief Investigators from the Faculty of Science (Professor Steven Simpson from the School of Life Sciences or Associate Professor Svetlana Postnova from the School of Physics).

Background

This scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to students undertaking research as part of the ARC Linkage project "Paving the way for ultra-long-haul flights: strategies to mitigate jetlag" (InSync); A University of Sydney - Qantas partnership.

InSync project aims to develop and test strategies to mitigate jetlag, founded on biophysical modelling of circadian rhythms. It sets out to quantify the speed of circadian adaptation of sleep, alertness, and metabolism after transmeridian travel and to maximise it via optimised timing of in-flight and on-the-ground interventions. As such, it combines a field trial across multiple long-haul flights, computational modelling of jetlag and behaviours, jetlag interventions, and data fusion to understand the interactions within the complex system governing human circadian rhythms and their disturbances.

The project is interdisciplinary, with top-up scholarships available in

  • Physics and Engineering (quantitative modelling of Jetlag and Circadian Rhythms, sensors, data fusion, optimisation, machine learning),
  • Behavioural Psychology or Neuroscience (dynamics and interplay of sleep, alertness, physical activity; effects of timing of behaviours and environmental inputs on circadian rhythms),
  • Nutrition and Metabolism (nutrition, effects of jetlag on glucose and temperature regulation, effects of meal times on metabolic rhythms).

Successful candidates will work on a project within one or across multiple, topics of the InSync Linkage project. All PhD projects will be adjusted in collaboration with the successful candidates based on their background, interests, and alignment with the main project aims. All students will gain experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and collaboration with industry, as well as solving real-life problems and implementing solutions.

This Scholarship is funded by Qantas Airways Ltd.
