Born in Casterton in western Victoria and educated at The University of Melbourne, Australia, Maxwell Crossley is currently a Professor of Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) at The University of Sydney. Max started his career as a post-doctoral Fellow at the Research Institute for Medicine and Chemistry in Massachusetts USA with Professor Sir Derek Barton in 1976, then worked as a Research Associate at MIT USA with Professor JE Baldwin. In 1978 Max moved to Oxford University UK where he continued to work with Professor Baldwin and returned to Australia in 1980 as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Later that year Max moved to Sydney with his first position in Academia as a Lecturer at The University of Sydney, and from there has been promoted to Professor and University Professorial Fellow. Max is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (elected 2001). He has received a number of accolades for his research excellence, including the Birch Medal (1998), the H.G. Smith Memorial Medal (2001), a Centenary Medal (2003), the David Craig Medal (2012) and the Robert Burns Woodward Award (2012). Max’s main research interests are Porphyrin Chemistry, Amino Acids and Peptides of Biological Importance, Functional Materials and Molecular Electronics. Continuous research funding from the Australian Research Council since 1981 is in excess of A$10 million. In this time Max has published over 195 peer-reviewed articles in journals of international repute and more recently has successfully applied for two international patents. He has delivered numerous plenary and invited lectures at international symposia and conferences, and presented research colloquia at more than 60 institutions in France, Germany, The Netherlands, the UK, Japan, Sweden, China, Switzerland and Australia. The Crossley Research Group is busy and growing in numbers each year. There are approximately 10 members of his Group at The University of Sydney at present, along with numerous research collaborations occurring with both local and overseas universities.
