First-year Bachelor of Arts student Will is looking forward to exploring new ideas in 2021

Will, who is beginning the first year of his Bachelor of Arts degree this semester, is excited to be doing something on his own terms.

‘I did go to school last year, but that doesn’t count, right? You have to be there.’

Will is very much looking forward to all aspects of the University experience, including being exposed to new ideas and learning new things.

‘I’m doing an Arts degree, so it’s a lot of making art and exploring and just kind of experimenting, I think it’s super cool. Just the freedom to explore the things I’m interested in, without any pressure to be there, doing it for my own purpose so I can really enjoy it.’

After spending their final year of high school under COVID restrictions, when seeing people in person and activities outside the home became novelties, many of our first years are just happy to be doing something new.

‘Just meeting new people, getting involved in the course, pretty standard I feel!’ says Oscar, who is about to begin a Bachelor of Psychology.

‘You know. Enjoying this beautiful campus that we have.’

Electra, who is about to begin a degree in International Relations, agreed. ‘I’m excited to be in a place that looks like Hogwarts!’

While being able to see people in person was a common theme among students returning to campus, many are happy to have their lives and careers back on track.

Chelsi, a first year International Relations student, is happy he’s finally able to start working towards his goals after taking a gap year in 2020.

‘I just want to learn, get a degree, get on the pathway to what I want to do with my life.’

Erin, a second-year psychology student, is looking forward to continuing her degree:

‘Getting back to normal hopefully, and getting back into psychology!’

Hope got most of us out of 2020, that’s all you can wish for in times of uncertainty. Just understanding this new world better made me hope for more.

Second year International Relations student Patricia is excited to see what will happen on a global scale in 2021 and hopes for a year of positive change.

Of course, our students are also thinking about the bigger picture, and they have high hopes for what may lie ahead for the world in 2021.

‘Seeing a more stable environment’, says Patricia, who is beginning second year studies in International Relations and Psychology.

‘I’m keen to see what happens in terms of worldly stuff, how politics will play out, how new things are going to be carried on this year. That’s what I’m excited about.’

Patricia explained that it was hope that got her through the hard times of 2020 and this hope is still carrying her forward.

‘Hope got most of us out of 2020, that’s all you can wish for in times of uncertainty. Just understanding this new world better made me hope for more.’
