When can I travel and study overseas?
The earliest you might be able to travel overseas for a global experience will be during the upcoming Winter break (June-August) for a short-term program, or Semester 1, 2024 for a full semester exchange.
Application deadlines vary so check the Global Mobility Database for the latest information and sessions. If you're in the later stages of your degree or enrolled in postgraduate studies, don't worry there are still options. Am I eligible to study overseas?
Eligibility varies depending on the global experience you are looking to pursue (e.g. semester/short-term programs). Generally speaking, you need a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 50 and must have completed at least 24 credit points at the time of application. Eligibility requirements can be found on the Student Website. You will also need to meet any additional host country, or institution, requirements e.g language level or a higher WAM.
I had never studied overseas before, so I didn't know what to expect. I discovered that it's a great way to extend your understanding of your chosen profession and allows you to travel at the same time. You will come back to university with a better appreciation of your course and you'll make great friends.
What can I study overseas?
The units you complete during your global experience will vary depending on your degree and the program you wish to undertake. For most short-term programs (usually 2-6 weeks over the summer/winter breaks), you can decide if you want to receive credit.
After you’ve applied to the Semester and year-long Exchange Programs, you will be provided guidance around which units you will need to undertake before, during, and after your global experience. Sydney Abroad info sessions and application workshops will guide you through this process.
How much does it all cost?
Your destination, living expenses, accommodation preferences, extra travel, flights and more, all impact the cost of a global experience. It’s important to plan your personal budget so that you can choose the right destination and program.
As an exchange student (on a short-term, semester, or year-long program), you'll remain enrolled and continue to pay tuition and SSAF fees to the University of Sydney for the duration of your program. For non-exchange programs - which are typically short-term - you enrol and pay tuition fees directly to the host institution or program provider. There are Sydney Abroad scholarships and Faculty-specific scholarships available. If you hold a commonwealth supported place within your course, you may be eligible for an OS-HELP loan.
