5 things you should do at Welcome Fest 2023
Join fellow new students at the official welcome in the Great Hall.
1. Receive a grand welcome
To welcome you to the University of Sydney, you’re invited to our official welcome event for all new students outside the Great Hall on Wednesday 15 February. At the event you’ll hear from our University leaders and special guest speakers, meet and connect with fellow new students, and learn about some of the exciting upcoming experiences you’ll have during your studies.

There are also welcome events that provide specific information, tips and advice relevant to particular cohorts, including:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Students who are new to Sydney
- Students enrolled in an alternative pathway program
- International students
- Postgraduate students
- Non-recent school leaver students.
The official welcome events for new students are not to be missed, so make sure you add the events to your Welcome Planner.
2. Get to know our Library
Did you know we have 14 libraries across our campuses? That means you’ll never be far away from our impressive book collections, research and learning resources, and support from our friendly Library staff.
During Welcome Fest, you’ll get the opportunity to learn about our Library facilities and services, as well as meet fellow new students through a range of fun social events, including:
- Library tours
- Scavenger hunts
- Speed meet and chats
- VR and 3D printing demonstrations.
With hundreds of clubs and societies to choose from, you're bound to find a group that peaks your interest.
3. Explore hundreds of clubs and societies
From chocolate and roller derby to ethno-cultural and religious groups, there’s something for everyone amongst the hundreds of clubs and society stalls at Welcome Fest.
The University of Sydney Union’s (USU) clubs and societies are one of the best ways to immerse yourself in university life, make new friends and enjoy in your interests (or find new ones). Exploring the stalls during Welcome Fest is a great way to see all your options in one place and chat with existing members about what it's like to get involved.
4. Stock up on freebies
Most students will tell you that the best part about Welcome Fest is the freebies. Plenty of clubs and societies hold BBQs and cake stalls, and there’s always people roaming around Eastern Avenue with giveaways, so keep your eyes peeled for free goodies throughout Welcome Fest!

5. Catch Aussie artists on the mainstage
After a full day of exploring clubs and societies, participating in social activities and making new friends, there’s nothing better then gathering outside the Great Hall to watch some incredible Aussie artists perform.
All will be revealed closer to Welcome Fest, so keep an eye on our Instagram (@sydney_uni) to be among the first to know which Aussie artists will grace our main stage.

Don’t be afraid to ask. Feel free to approach student volunteers or our friendly staff and ask about anything you can’t find or figure out during Welcome. They can usually be identified by a staff lanyard, a nametag, an "Ask Me" badge or a volunteer t-shirt.
