The Modern Slavery Unit's anti-slavery stall will be at International Student Welcome this Thursday 8 and Friday 9 February, as well as during USU's Welcome Fest from Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 February. Visit the anti-slavery stall to learn more about job scams and misleading job advertisements as you chat with the Modern Slavery team, play games and collect freebies.
Have you ever wondered if the job advertisement you saw online is real or fake? You may be looking for work while studying and find a job advertisement that sounds perfect, but do you know how to spot a scam from a real job ad?
A fake job advertisement often sounds 'too good to be true', offering great pay, work conditions and flexibility. But, once you begin employment, these conditions may be the opposite of what was initially described. You may find yourself stuck in this job with little or no pay, and with your freedom restricted due to threats, control, force or coercion, it can be increasingly difficult for you to leave.
There are more than 40,000 people living in modern slavery in Australia today, so it can happen to anyone, anywhere. While Australia is a great place to work and study, not all employers do the right thing. Being tricked into a job and being taken advantage of at work (also known as deceptive recruitment and workplace exploitation), may be forms of modern slavery.
The Modern Slavery Unit is a dedicated expert team providing a University-wide strategic approach for addressing modern slavery, including engaging and supporting students with awareness and providing access to support for students who may be experiencing exploitation.
The Unit's anti-slavery stall at Welcome is your opportunity to learn more about modern slavery, its prevalence in Australia, and how you can protect yourself and others from being exploited in the workforce.
