AMST4115: American Studies: Theory and Practice
2025 unit information
We will trace the intellectual evolution of American Studies since WWII. Using classic texts we examine key themes (race, gender, sexuality) and concepts (culture, empire, power) that have shaped American Studies, consider major methodological and theoretical frameworks and examine recent developments.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. critically understand American Studies as a field and engage with the different approaches and methodologies scholars have used to analyse its key themes
- LO2. examine a key theme in American Studies by identifying it, compiling a bibliography of related sources, and critically analysing the literature
- LO3. communicate ideas and engage with the ideas of others.
