This unit continues to build your communicative skills in formal and colloquial Arabic through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities in and outside of class. You will communicate about familiar topics using memorized phrases and simple sentences. Preparation for class and active participation in small group activities remain essential components of the unit.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. speak fluently and accurately about self and immediate environment, initiate and sustain conversations on a number of topics (e.g., family, friends, study, etc.) and narrate in present tense
  • LO2. initiate and maintain dialogue in both Colloquial Arabic and Standard Arabic when appropriate
  • LO3. demonstrate familiarity with many aspects of Arab culture, such as social and religious customs and traditions, family life, and education
  • LO4. understand written and oral texts on familiar topics and understand the main ideas without using a dictionary
  • LO5. write cohesive and coherent texts beyond the sentence level.
