ARCO2008: Ancient Italy: Etruscans and Romans

2022 unit information

Despite being a superpower of the archaic Mediterranean very little historical knowledge of the Etruscan civilisation survives, leaving much to archaeology. This unit will begin by surveying this enigmatic group before moving onto Rome as the Republic begins its expansion.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate specialised knowledge about the Etruscan and Roman cultures of ancient Italy
  • LO2. demonstrate a capacity for archaeological interpretation, and understand the importance of archaeology in studying the past of societies with very little remaining written evidence
  • LO3. demonstrate an enhanced knowledge of cultural change in the Italian Peninsula, as well as an understanding of approaches to interpreting the archaeological record
  • LO4. demonstrate the ability to communicate your understanding appropriately in written English.
  • LO5. demonstrate the ability to communicate your understanding appropriately in spoken English
