ARHT6921: Dissertation Part 2
2025 unit information
Master degree candidates only may undertake research and writing on an approved topic towards a dissertation of 12000 words under the supervision of an academic staff member. The topic is elective. Art Curatorship students have the option of writing a thesis in the form of an exhibition plan and catalogue Essay. The dissertation is equivalent to two units of study. Students enrol in ARHT6920 Dissertation 1 in their first semester of research and complete by enrolling in ARHT6921 Dissertation 2 in the following semester.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Students undertake a program of independent research on a topic of their choice under the supervision of a nominated member of the Department, and write a 12,000 word thesis. This is a substantial piece of writing which will present an overall argument or interpretation of your topic over the course of several chapters. MAC students have the option of writing an exhibition proposal instead of a more conventional dissertation. If you choose this option, it needs to include a catalogue essay (9,000 words in length). The remaining 3,000 words can be an exhibition proposal (outlining the rationale of the exhibition), a list of works and a select number of catalogue entries. The dissertation is composed of TWO units (Dissertation 1 & Dissertation 2) and is undertaken over TWO SEMESTERS; on no account can both units be taken in a single semester.
