This unit offers a parallel study of the European modernists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso from their earliest academic training in 1890 to the aftermath of World War II Situating them within the avantgarde and its institutions it encompasses Fauvism analytic and synthetic Cubism decorative modernism the Return to Order Surrealism and the Cutout Key artworks will be a focus for analyses of the criticism of the day Current interpretative models textual as well as exhibitionbased eg MatissePicasso MoMA New York will also be debated
